Also, with the objective of building a town which is interesting, stimulating and yet relaxing, the advantages offered by being located at the water front are being fully utilized to provide as much open space as possible. To this end, the seascape and greenery will be blended together to provide a park like setting, including a promenade. There are also plans to link the "Rinkoh Park" ( about 9.3 ha). the Nippon Maru Memorial Park" ( about 5.5 ha.), and the "Aka-Renga park ( about 6.9 ha.) into one network. The parks showcase a beautiful sailing ship which sailed in bygone days, docks made by stones, warehouses and other historical buildings. The port and sea facilities and the landscape and environment of the port will be fully incorporated into the new development. The seascape and port environment will play a prominent role in the future development of MINATO MIRAI 21.
In addition, MINATO MIRAI 21 is the only area in Japan where the government gives approval of doing the Eco-Port business. Efforts to improve see area environments and greenery spaces have been made.

In the Yokohama Port Side area, based on the concept of"city of art and design", a unique redevelopment plan is currently in progress centered mainly on the supply of urban housing . (total number of houses, 1800 for a population of 6500 people).
An international design competition was held for re-developing the Ohsanbashi Pier, which is adjacent to the MINATO MIRAI 21 area and is the gateway of Yokohama, into a new passenger cruise line terminal for the 21st century. Currently a passenger liner terminal plan based on a design submitted to the competition by Mr. Alejandro Zaera-Polo and Ms. Farshid Moussavi is under development.
